Men lie, women lie, but numbers don’t’ lie…well not if Samsung is involved. Hip-Hop’s most influential rapper Jay-Z has recently inked a deal with Samsung for his new album “Magna Carta Holy Grail.” This deal is groundbreaking to say the least. Jigga is going to release the album free to 1 million Galaxy listeners on July 4th, three days earlier than its release in stores. Samsung agreed to purchase 1 million copies of the album before its release sparking rumors that Hov’s 12th album will be “Platinum” before it’s even released. However, according to AllHipHop.com, a source close to MTV, says that they have spoken with SoundScan, and they will not count the Samsung purchases to Jay’s first week sales.
Hip-Hop is at a new forefront. Never before in history has so much profit been generated from endorsements. But recently we have seen that these companies that are endorsing the artist may not necessarily “support” the artist. This year alone we have seen the “greatest rapper alive,” Lil Wayne lose his sponsorship with Mountain Dew; and we all remember how the Boss Ricky Rose’ was dropped from Reebok for his controversial “rape” lyric in Rocko’s UOENO smash single. Even Jigga himself has been in a little controversy over his recent trip to Cuba. But I highly doubt Jay-Z is going to lose any endorsements over it. Jigga responded to the Cuban controversy in the form of “Open Letter” by rapping “Boy from the hood but got White House clearance.” Jay-z’s recent trip to Cuba spawned rumors that he was possibly in the country to scout potential Baseball talent; which brings us to this point.
In Baseball when a record is tainted, the MLB puts an (*) next to the record for example, Barry Bonds career homerun record *756. So should there be an (*) next to Jigga’s album sale stats stats? You be the judge on that one……Gone.
